CARDIFF JAZZ SOCIETY

SUPPORTED BY A LOTTERY GRANT
FROM THE ARTS COUNCIL OF WALES

PRS FOUNDATION – JAZZ PROMOTERS AWARD 2009/10

Cardiff Jazz Society’s educational initiative “The New Generation” was once again a roaring success. Held during July, the project, free to students, is supported by a lottery grant from the Arts Council of Wales. It is designed to provide opportunities for young people of school age, to progress their musical ability by appearing in public performance with some of the best musicians on the jazz scene in Wales.

Now in its third year, the course is held in conjunction with the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. Tutors Dick Hamer (saxes), Paula Gardiner (double bass), Gareth Roberts (trombone), Paul Jones (piano) and drummer Mark O’Connor, guided the students through two enjoyable days of practise, enabling the students to get a taste of the college facilities.

The initiative culminated in a successful performance at the capitals Café Jazz in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. Enjoyment was had by all.

Amongst the audience was Jazz Services director Chris Hodgkins who said, "This is a most impressive initiative. Credit to Cardiff Jazz Society, who have been able to add this course to their programme of quality music". Paula Gardiner, Head of the jazz department at RWCMD, said “It was great to see so many up and coming players with great potential”. Four students have gone on to enrol at the college, whilst others have progressed to making numerous appearances at jazz venues across South Wales. Cardiff Jazz Society is working to forge permanent links with the college and it is intended that the project will continue to be an annual event. With the continued support of the Arts Council of Wales, this can become a reality. Check out www.cardiffjazz.org
