CARDIFF JAZZ SOCIETY
ANDREAS VARADY
Guitar prodigy Andreas Varady is the special guest of Cardiff Jazz Society, at Café Jazz, on Thursday 12 August (8.45pm). Born in Slovakia, into a Gypsy family, the exceptionally gifted Andreas Varady has been playing the guitar since the age of four. Although only twelve years old, he is already an accomplished and imaginative musician, inspired by his favourite guitarists George Benson, Wes Montgomery and Joe Pass. Now residing in Ireland, Andreas is just getting known outside of his adoptive country, and it's just a matter of time before he becomes a regular on the international music festival circuit. He is well on his way to a busy musical life. It would be safe to say that we haven't seen talent of this calibre at this age since 1978, when a 12-year old Bireli Lagrene emerged on the scene with a fully-formed technique in the Django Reinhardt tradition. Andreas performed on RTE’s ‘The Guitar’ in 2009 and has since recorded for BBC TV and radio. Following his popularity on You Tube, he has been invited to play at numerous festivals this year, including Cathedral Quarter Arts Festival, Sligo Jazz Festival, Derry Jazz Festival, Cork Jazz Festival and Brecon Jazz Festival. He recently received a scholarship from the Arts Council to study at this year's prestigious Skidmore Jazz Institute summer school in New York, making him the youngest musician to have been accepted there. On this occasion, Andreas Varady appears while on a regional tour with Ondrej Varady (rhythm guitar), pianist Phil Mead, Dave Moses (double bass) and drummer John Gibbon.
