South African pianist Philip Clouts brings his quartet to Café Jazz, as special guests of Cardiff Jazz Society, at Café Jazz, on Thursday 25 February (8.45pm).

Known for his work with Afrobeat band ZubopGambia, Clouts teams up with F-IRE Collective saxophonist Carlos Lopez-Real. They deliver a new set of uplifting music which integrates influences from Latin and African jazz and New Orleans funk.

”Although clearly steeped in the music of his native South Africa, Clouts touches numerous other bases on this fun, wholly accessible album, and his deft, lively, intensely rhythmic piano is skilfully complemented throughout by a vigorous but sensitive rhythm section.” Chris Parker Jazz Review
“Clouts has particularly subtle judgement when it comes to harmonising simple melodies, making them neither too bare nor over-elaborate.” The Observer
“Philip Clouts is an accomplished leader.” The Independent
“It has a very infectious feel-good quality about it” Campbell Burnap

Carlos Lopez-Real (saxophones)
Carlos performs with Mandorla, and bands from the F-IRE Collective, composing and arranging for the large ensemble. In recent years he has also played with Gary Husband, Tom Arthurs, Justin Quinn and John Mayer.
‘Lopez-Real set the pulses racing’ John Eyles, bbc.co.uk
‘He has a nice line in Lee Konitz smokiness but also its opposite, a raw and explosive multiphonics.’ John Fordham

Alex Keen (double bass) works regularly on the jazz scene with names such as guitarist Jim Mullen, saxophonists Tim Whitehead and Theo Travis, and organist Mike Carr.

Brent Keefe (drums) is one of the most in-demand players on the London scene, yet still finds time to work as a journalist for Drummer magazine.
